Thanks for this insightful blog. I have been fortunate to work with architects who really did listen. But beginning with Kevin Gibbs, I quickly got sold on the great value of an owner's rep. You couldn't have picked a better mentor, and you certainly added value to any project lucky enough to have you, too. I've always felt called to my profession, but even in librarianship, sometimes you have to cast about to find just the right for. I'm glad you've found yours.

This is a very common pathway to becoming an OR. In general, architecture as it is now practiced at most firms is a reverse pyramid of competency and knowledge. The folks who are smart and capable very quickly leave architecture (whether they are good designers or not). It is the old adage of the "bad money, pushes out the good". Architecture will be changing a great deal and firms like yours will thrive and survive one hopes. If you have licensed architects of staff or licensed yourself, it is important to know that your client expects and should receive services in their interests, not in the professional's interest. It is this confusion that has led to architecture firms and architects simply shedding all responsibility for accountability or the acquisition of knowledge that is needed to stay capable of providing the objective information and judgment while making absolutely sure that you do not abrogate the final decision-making/informed consent of the client.

Oh, Paul, you're still such a baby! I turned 65 earlier this year and am still full of ideas and enthusiasm about my job, but I have decided to retire sometime next spring. I want to take that energy and enthusiasm and explore new things.
