Agreed! There’s definitely a time and a place to swear and there’s an etiquette around it, a mix of who is who’s senior, who is whose client, and just personalities. There’s also a link to position… while I would never send my boss a vulgar cat meme as an email response, some of the folks I work with have received (and sent) their fair share of uh versatile words.

Sometimes no other word will suffice, you just need that one. As an English major my favorite thing about F*** is that is can be used as a noun, verb, pronoun, or adjective. That is one versatile f****** word.

Bob – Thank you for telling the other part of the cursing story, “just because you can, doesn’t mean you should.” While it is true that letting a swear word fly around a colleague indicates a level of trust, it is certainly not a best-practice in business management. And, never, ever in front of an audience, such as during a board meeting.

I am not a prude and do use course language around adult family if it is called for – usually to express frustration, as when driving. I never use the word “fuck”. Toastmasters taught me 40 years ago that using vulgar language is a indication that you have a poor vocabulary; there is always a better word.

I learned on the job and from personal experience that a vulgar word in the wrong circumstance can be disastrous. It is not worth the risk. I have fired clients who have expressed improper language to my female employees.

I don’t mind when clients swear; except I do cringe when they use the “F word”. It has become way too popular in board meetings – and unnecessary. Just because the chairman uses it, doesn’t mean that you should.
